Retail trade flash estimate: sales fell by 3.6 per cent year-on-year in May

According to Statistics Finlands retail trade flash estimate, the sales of retail trade decreased by 3.6 per cent in May from May 2014. Over the same period, the volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, went down by 2.9 per cent. In daily consumer goods trade, sales contracted by 4.8 per cent and the sales volume by 4.2 per cent in May from the corresponding period of the previous year.

Description: The index of turnover of trade describes development in the turnover of enterprises engaged in trade. Turnover for the largest enterprises in their respective industries is described with the data collected with the sales inquiry while the data on sales obtained from periodic tax returns are exploited to describe the turnover of other enterprises. Turnover is exclusive of value-added tax. In addition, the volume index of retail trade sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, is produced on trade.

Change: New seasonal adjustment software adopted

Starting from the January 2015 data, a new seasonal adjustment software J-Demetra+ will be adopted in the indices of turnover.
