Farmers risk of death at work has grown clearly over the past ten years

Risk of fatal accidents at work among own-account workers in agriculture has grown by 11.2 per cent between 2007 and 2016. These data derive from Statistics Finland's occupational accidents statistics, in which two five-year periods were compared with each other. In the 2007 to 2011 period, own-account workers in agriculture had 29 fatal accidents at work, which is an average of 7.0 fatal accidents per 100,000 own-account workers in agriculture. In the 2012 to 2016 period, own-account workers in agriculture had 27 fatal accidents at work, which is an average of 7.8 fatal accidents per 100,000 own-account workers in agriculture. The most recent occupational accident statistics contain data on the accidents at work of farmers in 2016.

Description: The statistics on occupational accidents contain annual data on the occupational accidents that have occurred to wage and salary earners and own-account workers in agriculture. The statistics also contain data on occupational accidents that have occurred to other self-employed persons and the commuting accidents that have occurred to wage and salary earners. The data for the occupational accident statistics are created as a by-product from insurance activity, so that all the accidents at work for which insurance institutions have paid compensations are recorded in the statistics. The cut-off point is the last day of the year following the statistical reference year. The statistics examine primarily the occupational accidents that have resulted in a disability of at least four days. This delimitation corresponds to the one used in Eurostat statistics on accidents at work. Earlier Statistics Finland statistics on occupational accidents have applied the limit of disability of at least three days.
