According to Statistics Finland, 56 per cent of the consumption expenditure of the lowest-income quintile was spent on housing and food in 2022. Housing and energy accounted for 39 per cent of the consumption expenditure of low-income households. Food expenses covered 18 per cent of the expenditure of low-income earners. The share of consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages grew for all households by one percentage point compared with 2016.

  • In 2022, the share of food and non-alcoholic beverages (main group 01) of consumption expenditure was 18 per cent in the lowest-income quintile, while it was 12 per cent in the highest-income quintile.
  • The share of food in consumption expenditure has decreased consistently in the long term, but in the data of the Household Budget Survey 2022 the share made an upturn for the first time.
  • The largest relative differences by main group in the consumption of the low-income and high-income quintiles were in transport expenditure (main group 07), furnishings, household appliances and routine household maintenance (05), and consumption of personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services (13).
  • The lowest-income quintile spent approximately EUR 560 per month per consumption unit on housing and energy, while the highest-income quintile used approximately EUR 1,100 per month per consumption unit on them.
  • The data of the statistics on households' consumption which are based on the Household Budget Survey are published with the new COICOP2018 classification (only in Finnish).
