According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,550,612 at the end of May. Our country's population increased by 2,371 persons during January-May. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 9,094. The number of births was 8,269 lower than that of deaths.

During January-May, 18,291 children were born, which is 2,024 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2021. The number of deaths was 26,560, which is 3,249 higher than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary statistics for January-May, 13,661 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 4,567 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 420 higher and the number of emigrants 165 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 2,601 of the immigrants and 2,974 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 102,780 during January-May. Compared with the corresponding period in 2021, the decrease was 3,271 migrations according to the municipal division of 2022.
