Finland's preliminary population figure 5,452,821 at the end of January

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of January was 5,452,821. During January Finland's population increased by 1,400 persons, which is 50 persons less than in the preliminary data for the January year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 1,100 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 300 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for January, 2,350 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1,250 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 400 lower and the number of emigrants 100 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 600 of the immigrants and 900 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During January 4,800 children were born, which is 50 children less than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths was 4,500, which is 300 lower than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 18,850 during January. Compared with the previous January, the decrease was 950 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.
