Finland’s preliminary population figure 5,516,343 at the end of June

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of June was 5,516,343. During January-June Finland's population increased by 3,213 persons, which is 2,783 less than in the preliminary data the year before. The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 6,919 higher than that of emigrants. There was no natural population growth, since deaths exceeded births by 3,706 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for January-June 2018, a total of 23,726 children were born, which is 1,144 fewer than in the corresponding period 2017. The number of deaths was 27,432, which is 374 lower than one year earlier.

Altogether 13,787 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 6,868 persons emigrated from Finland during January-June period. The number of immigrants was 1,109 lower and the number of emigrants 904 higher than in the previous year. In all, 4,013 of the immigrants and 4,381 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 127,610 by the end of June. Compared with the previous year, the decrease was 690 migrations according to the municipal division of 2018.

Same-sex marriages took legal effect in March 2017. A total of 84 women and 54 men entered into marriage in which the spouse was of the same sex during January-June period in 2018. In all, 82 women and 48 men changed their registered partnership into marriage.

According to preliminary data by region, the population grew only in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Åland and Varsinais-Suomi in the beginning of 2018.

The population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it grew by 9,908 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 1,075 persons. Relative to the population, population increase was highest in Åland, 7.2 per, mil, Uusimaa, 6.0 per mil and in Pirkanmaa, 2.1 per mil. Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Etelä-Savo that lost 1,169 persons of its population. The population of Lapland decreased by 850 persons, which was the second biggest population loss. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Etelä-Savo, 7.9 per mil.

Most migration gain from intramunicipal and international migration was collected by Uusimaa, 7,930 persons and Pirkanmaa, 1,280 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms based on total net migration was attained by Åland, 7.1 per mil and Uusimaa, 4.8 per mil.

In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the region of Etelä-Savo, 513 persons. In the region of North Ostrobothnia the loss was 474 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was found in the region of Etelä-Savo, 3.5 per mil of the population.

During January to June 2018, migration between regions numbered 57,995. The positive gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Päijät-Häme, Varsinais-Suomi and Åland. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 4,689 persons. The relative migration gain was also highest in Uusimaa, 2.8 per mil of the population.

Migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in absolute numbers in the region of North Ostrobothnia, 789 persons. Migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in relative terms also in the region of Etelä-Savo, 4.1 per mil of the population.
