Unemployment rate 7.9 per cent in November

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in November 2013 was 210,000, which was 17,000 higher than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 7.9 per cent, having been 7.3 per cent in November of the year before. There were 32,000 fewer employed persons than in November of the previous year.

In November 2013, the number of employed persons was 2,431,000, which was 32,000 lower than a year earlier (margin of error ±32,000). There were 14,000 fewer employed men and 18,000 fewer employed women than in November 2012. The number of employed persons decreased in the private sector but remained almost unchanged in the public sector compared with November 2012.

In November, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 67.8 per cent, which was 0.6 percentage points lower than one year before. From last year’s November, men’s employment rate fell by 0.5 percentage points to 68.0 per cent and women’s by 0.7 percentage points to 67.5 per cent. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.2 per cent.

According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, there were 210,000 unemployed in November 2013, i.e. 17,000 more than one year earlier (margin of error ±16,000). The number of unemployed men was 113,000 and that of women 96,000.

At 7.9 per cent, the unemployment rate in November was 0.7 percentage points higher than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 8.4 per cent and women’s 7.5 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 8.5 per cent.

In November, there were a total of 656,000 young people aged 15 to 24 . Of them, 261,000 were employed and 47,000 unemployed. Thus, the labour force of young people (employed and unemployed) totalled 308,000. In November, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24, that is, the proportion of the unemployed among the labour force, stood at 15.4 per cent, which was 0.2 percentage points lower than one year previously. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.6 per cent. The share of unemployed young people aged 15 to 24 among the population in the same age group was 7.2 per cent.

There were 1,450,000 persons in the inactive population in November 2013, which was 26,000 more than in November 2012. Of the inactive population, 144,000 persons were in disguised unemployment .

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of November 2013, there were altogether 296,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the  employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 39,000 higher than in November 2012.

Unemployment increased from the previous year's November in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres; most in Kainuu (28%), Uusimaa (24%) and Pirkanmaa (21%). At the end of November, the number of persons fully laid off registered at the employment and economic development offices was 24,000, which was 7,000 more than twelve months earlier.

The number of persons engaged in services included in the activation stage totalled 125,000 at the end of November, which was 13,000 more than in November of the previous year. Altogether, 4.7 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy services.

There were 36,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 5,000 higher than in last year's November. During November, 30,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which was 1,000 fewer than in November 2012.
