Unemployment rate 7.0 per cent in October

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in October was 186,000, which was 9,000 lower than one year ago. The unemployment rate in October was 7.0 per cent, having been 7.4 per cent twelve months earlier. There were 8,000 more employed persons than in October of the previous year.

In October 2011, the number of employed persons was 2,458,000, which was 8,000 higher than a year earlier. This change fits within the margin of error for the number of employed persons (±30,000). Employment increased among both men and women.

In October, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 68.3 per cent, which was 0.4 percentage points higher than one year before. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.7 per cent. From last year’s October, men’s employment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points to 69.3 per cent and women’s by 0.3 percentage points to 67.2 per cent.

According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, there were 186,000 unemployed in October 2011, i.e. 9,000 fewer than in October of the year before. This change fits within the margin of error for the number of unemployed persons (±16,000). The number of unemployed men was 106,000 and that of women 79,000.

At 7.0 per cent, the unemployment rate was 0.3 percentage points lower in October than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 7.8 per cent and women’s 6.2 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 7.7 per cent. In October 2011, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 was 17.1 per cent, which was 1.5 percentage points lower than in October of the year before. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.9 per cent.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of October 2011, there were altogether 226,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 14,000 lower than in October of the year before.

Unemployment decreased from the previous year in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres (ELY). In Åland, the number of unemployed job seekers grew from the previous year (2%). The number of unemployed job seekers declined most in Häme (–11%), Pirkanmaa (–10%), Ostrobothnia (–7%) and Uusimaa (–10%). At the end of October, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 10,000, which was 5,000 lower than twelve months earlier.

The total number of persons covered by labour market policy measures was 117,000 at end of October, which was 3,000 higher than in October of the year before. Altogether 4.4 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy measures.

There were 27,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 2,000 lower than in last year's October. During this October, 38,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which is 3,000 more than in October 2010.
