Cubic volume covered of granted building permits higher than one year earlier

According to Statistics Finland’s data, in April to June 2021 building permits were granted for a total of 13.5 million cubic metres, 1.9 per cent more than one year ago. Over the period, 4.2 million cubic metres were granted for residential building projects, up by 14.4 per cent. The cubic volume of other than residential building construction went down by 2.9 per cent from the previous year.

Cubic volume granted for construction of detached houses grew briskly in the second quarter

In April to June, building permits granted for residential building projects totalled 4.2 million cubic metres, of which 2.2 million cubic metres were granted for block of flats projects and 2.0 million cubic metres for detached house projects. The cubic volume granted for detached houses has last been this high three years ago. The cubic volume granted for detached houses increased by 18.9 per cent and that for blocks of flats by 7.3 per cent from one year ago.

Building permits were granted for a total of 13,196 dwellings in the second quarter. The figure was 12.6 per cent higher than one year previously. Over the same period, construction of 17,323 dwellings was started, which is the largest number of dwellings started in the history of the current statistics. The growth was as much as 81.2 per cent from the previous year. The number of completed dwellings was 9,200.

Volume of residential building production grew briskly

In April to June, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production decreased by 0.7 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased by 5.8 per cent, while that of other than residential building construction decreased by 5.5 per cent. At the same time, building projects totalling 13.8 million cubic metres were started. Residential building starts totalled 5.2 million cubic metres, 61.6 per cent more than one year ago.

Cubic volume covered by grated building permits grew in the six-month period

In the first six-month period of 2021, building permits were granted for a total of 19,957 projects and for 22.8 million cubic metres. The corresponding figures for the year before were 18,522 projects and 21.7 million cubic metres. With its growth of 19.2 per cent, the cubic volume of residential building construction supports the growth of good five per cent in total construction. Other than residential building construction decreased by 0.5 per cent over the period from one year ago.

In January to June, cubic metres covered by building permits granted for residential building amounted to 7.4 million. Over the six-month period, 4.1 million cubic metres were granted for residential building projects, up by 17.8 per cent. The cubic volume for detached houses was 3.3 million and it grew by 18.4 per cent.

During the period, building permits were granted for a total of 23,845 new dwellings, up by 18.4 per cent from the previous year.

Preliminary data for July

For the time being, Statistics Finland publishes preliminary data on building projects started. This time series is available from 2018 onwards.

According to preliminary data, the moving annual total of building projects started grew in July by 0.4 per cent from June. The moving annual total of the volume was still briskly growing by 10.9 per cent compared to the year before.
