Cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew by 22 per cent in October

In October 2010, building permits were granted for a total of three million cubic metres, which is 22 per cent more than one year ago. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings went up by 32 per cent in October. The biggest growth, nearly 87 per cent, was recorded for the cubic volume of residential blocks of flats. The cubic volume of detached houses grew by over one quarter.

In October 2010, building permits were granted for 2,810 new dwellings, which is over one quarter more than one year earlier. The number of building permits granted for detached houses increased by 40 per cent and that for residential blocks of flats by 44 per cent.

Over the January to October period, the cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew by seven per cent from the previous year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings grew by close on 38 per cent and that of permits for public service buildings by 17 per cent. By contrast, the cubic volume covered by permits for commercial and office buildings decreased by nearly 18 per cent from the respective time period of the year before.

Volume of newbuilding went up by 31 per cent in October

In October 2010, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production was up by 31.1 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential buildings increased most, by close on 58 per cent from one year before. The strong growth was due to the exceptionally low volume of residential building in 2009.

The largest fall in volume of nearly 12 per cent from last year's October was recorded in industrial building construction. The volume of office building construction also decreased by almost 10 per cent year-on-year.
