Average age of farmers is growing

The average age of farmers has risen by four years from the beginning of the 2000s. The average age of all farmers was 47 in 2000, while it was 51 years in 2013. The share of farmers aged under 35 in the entire farmer population has fallen from 12 per cent in 2000 to eight per cent in 2013. In 2013, nearly one-half or 47 per cent of farmers were aged between 50 and 64. These data derive from the 2013 statistics on the finances of agricultural and forestry enterprises published by Statistics Finland.
