Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 12 per cent in May 2019

Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by 12.3 per cent and 0.46 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments increased by 4.2 per cent from last year and 1.11 million nights were recorded for them in May 2019. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.57 million overnight stays, which was 6.4 per cent more than one year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Overnight stays by Russians increased most in May 2019

Among non-resident tourists, overnight stays by Russian tourist increased most in absolute numbers, by 27,000 nights. This was 72 per cent higher than in the year before.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Russians with 64,400 overnight stays. The second largest group was Swedes with 45,800 overnight stays. The third largest group was tourists from the U.S. with 38,100 overnight stays, and fourth was German tourists with 37,700 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was British tourists (25,600 nights), sixth was Chinese visitors (24,400 nights), seventh Estonian tourists (20,400 nights) and eight French visitors (15,000 nights).

Examined by region, overnight stays increased most in relative terms in Lapland, by 37per cent, and second most Kymenlaakso by 18 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays decreased most in relative terms Satakunta, by five per cent, and second most in Åland, by four per cent.

Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 273,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 33,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists increased by seven per cent in Uusimaa and by 95 per cent in Lapland from one year ago. The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 59 per cent and that of Lapland 7 per cent.

Overnight stays in hotels increased by 7.1 per cent in May 2019

In May, the total number of nights spent in hotels was 1.32 million, which was 7.1 per cent more than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by 12.0 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 397,000 overnight stays for them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 0.93 million. The number was 5.1 per cent higher than in May 2018.

Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Uusimaa, 71.7 per cent, and in Southwest Finland, 59.5 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 77.9 per cent, 62.5 per cent in Tampere, 67.2 per cent in Turku, 63.5 per cent in Oulu and 51.1 per cent in Rovaniemi.

In May 2019, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 111.45 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 103.17. There was a total of 53,028 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 1,761 more than in May 2018.

Total number of nights spent grew by 1.9 per cent in January to May 2019

In January to May 2019, a total of 8.29 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 1.9 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 5.63 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 2.66 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by 2.2 per cent and the number of nights spent by non-resident tourists by 1.4 per cent from the previous year.

Among non-resident tourists, overnight stays by tourists from the U.S. increased most in absolute numbers, by 24,800 nights. This was 29 per cent higher than in the year before. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 14,400 nights. Their overnight stays were four per cent down on January to May 2018.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Russians with 353,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 232,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was Britons with 210,000 overnight stays, and fourth were French tourists with 190,000 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Swedes (166,000 nights), sixth was Chinese (145,000 nights), seventh was Dutch tourists (141,000 nights) and eight visitors from the U.S. (111,000 nights).
