Nights spent by resident tourists increased by 2.4 per cent in June 2013

The number of recorded nights spent by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in June 2013 was 1.6 million, which is 2.4 per cent more than in June 2012. The number of nights spent by foreign tourists in turn went down by 2 per cent and totalled nearly 544,000 million overnight stays. The total number of overnight stays increased by 1.2 per cent from last year and altogether slightly under 2.2 million overnight stays were recorded at accommodation establishments in June 2013. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments by Russian visitors increased by 6.4 per cent in June 2013 and, as usual, they were the largest group of foreign visitors with 107,000 overnight stays. German visitors came next with 65,000 overnight stays, even though the nights spent by them decreased by 14.6 per cent from last year. Swedish tourists came third with nearly 58,000 overnight stays, which was one per cent more than in June 2012. Nearly 28,000 overnight stays were recorded for both British and American tourists at accommodation establishments. Overnight stays by British tourists increased by 11.6 per cent and those by American tourists by 4.9 per cent year-on-year. Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by visitors from China increased most, however. Good 19,000 overnight stays were recorded for them at Finnish accommodation establishments in June, which was 40.9 per cent more than one year before. By contrast, Estonian visitors spent 27.3 per cent fewer nights than last year. Overnight stays by Italian, French and Dutch visitors also decreased heavily, by 11-14 per cent from 2012.

By region, the total number of overnight stays increased most in June in the regions of Etelä-Savo, up by 39.9 per cent, and North Ostrobothnia, up by 13.6 per cent. Overnight stays increased by 11.9 per cent in Päijät-Häme and by 10.8 per cent in Satakunta. Nights spent decreased most in Lapland, 11.3 per cent down, and in Kanta-Häme, 6.7 per cent down. The total number of overnight stays at all Finnish accommodation establishments in June was 1.2 per cent higher than one year earlier.

Nights spent by resident tourists in hotels increased by 0.5 per cent in June 2013

Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered good one million in June 2013. The number was almost the same as in June 2012. By contrast, overnight stays by foreign tourists decreased by 4.6 per cent and hotels recorded nearly 439,000 of them. The total number of nights spent in hotels was nearly 1.5 million in June 2013, which was one per cent lower than twelve months earlier.

The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 55.7 per cent in June. One year earlier, it was 57.0 per cent. Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Uusimaa, 71.5 per cent, and Åland, 62.5 per cent. In Vantaa, the hotel room occupancy rate was 70.3 per cent and in Mariehamn 76.0 per cent. Hotel room occupancy rate in Helsinki was 78.9 per cent.

In June 2013, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 90.33 per day for the whole country. One year earlier, it was nearly the same at EUR 90.26.

Total number of nights spent at all accommodation establishments fell by 0.7 per cent in January to June 2013

Between January and June 2013, the number of nights spent at accommodation establishments in Finland totalled 9.4 million, which was 0.7 per cent down on the respective time period of last year. Overnight stays by resident tourists decreased by 0.9 per cent and accommodation establishments recorded a total of nearly 6.7 million of them. Overnight stays by foreign tourists numbered good 2.7 million, which was almost the same as in January to June 2012.

Nearly 824,000 nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments were recorded for Russians and they were, as expected, the largest group of foreign visitors in January to June 2013. Overnight stays of Russian visitors increased by 6.4 per cent from the respective time period of last year. The second largest group was Germans. Nearly 239,000 overnight stays were recorded for them, even though the drop from 2012 amounted to six per cent. Swedish visitors were the third largest group with good 208,000 overnight stays. Overnight stays by Swedish visitors have also decreased and 4.8 fewer overnight stays were recorded for them at accommodation establishments than in January to June 2012. By contrast, overnight stays by British tourists have increased heavily throughout the current year and in January to June, their stays rose to 201,000 nights, which was 11.4 per cent more than in the corresponding period in 2012. Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by visitors from China and Japan increased most. Overnight stays by Chinese tourists increased by 17.4 per cent and those by Japanese tourists by 15.4 per cent. By contrast, overnight stays by Estonian tourists decreased heavily and 86,500 overnight stays were recorded for them at accommodation establishments in January to June 2013, which was 26.3 per cent less than in the corresponding time period last year.
