Total output was showing growth in December

According to the seasonally adjusted series of the Monthly Indicator of Total Output calculated by Statistics Finland, the volume of total output grew by 1.8 per cent in December from the month before.

The series of the Monthly Indicator of Total Output are seasonally adjusted with the Tramo/Seats method. The latest observations of the series adjusted for seasonal and random variation (seasonally adjusted and trend series) become revised with new observations in seasonal adjustment methods.

Total output was 0.6 per cent higher than in December 2004

The volume of total output went up by 0.6 per cent in December 2005 from December of the previous year. Among the six main industries of the Monthly Indicator, output only declined in manufacturing. December 2005 had one working day less than the corresponding month of the year before. Adjusted for working days, the volume of total output grew by 2.8 per cent.

According to the original series, industrial output fell by 5.2 per cent from December 2004. The output volumes of the whole metal industry went down by 7 per cent and production in its sub-industry of manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment declined by 15 per cent. In the wood and paper industry output went up by 5 per cent but declined by 6 per cent in energy supply. In other manufacturing, output volumes fell by 7 per cent from their previous year's levels.

Sales volumes of trade increased by 3 per cent. Motor vehicle sales grew by 2 per cent, wholesale trade by one per cent and retail trade by 5 per cent.

Primary production went up by 5 per cent form its December 2004 level. Transport increased by 3 per cent. Output grew by just under 3 per cent in other service industries and by 4 per cent in construction from December 2004.

The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on twelve monthly series on different industries of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting. The purpose of the Monthly Indicator is to anticipate the development of the quarterly gross domestic product calculated later with more detailed data.
