Turnover of large building construction enterprises from renovation building grew as newbuilding construction diminished in 2008

The turnover from renovation building of building construction enterprises with at least 20 employees totalled EUR 3 billion in 2008, which was about 19 per cent higher than in the year before. The total turnover of the largest construction enterprises was EUR 9.5 billion, of which renovation building generated 32 per cent. These data are based on Statistics Finland statistics on building construction enterprises' renovation building.

The total turnover of all construction enterprises with at least 20 employees remained on level with the previous year in 2008, being 1.1 per cent higher than in 2007. Construction enterprises' turnover from newbuilding construction decreased by a total of 5.6 per cent from the year before. The diminished volume of newbuilding was offset by increasing the volume of renovation building. Enterprises in the industry of building construction increased their turnover from renovations by nearly one-third from twelve months back. Turnover from renovations in specialised construction, or building installation and completion, grew by 7.5 per cent.

Approximately 65 per cent of the turnover from renovations came from renovations of non-residential buildings from which turnover increased by around one-third from the year before. Turnover from renovations of residential buildings also increased by around 16 per cent.

Turnover from renovation building has grown most among medium size construction enterprises with 50 to 250 employees. Their turnover from renovation building has gone up by good one-third.

Renovation building targets of large construction enterprises 2005-2008

The statistics on construction enterprises' renovation building are based on an inquiry covering all building construction enterprises with at least 20 employees. There are approximately 800 such enterprises. Civil engineering enterprises are excluded from the inquiry.
