Consumption of hard coal decreased by 28 per cent in 2011

According to Statistics Finland, nearly 28 per cent less hard coal was used as fuel in power and heat production in 2011 than in the year before. Its total consumption as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat amounted to 4.2 million tonnes, corresponding to 106 petajoules in energy content. In the last quarter of the year, consumption of hard coal amounted to around 0.9 million tonnes, which was 54 per cent less than one year earlier. Use of hard coal decreased in plants of separate production of electricity, which consumed 47 less of it than a year earlier in 2010.

In January to December 2011, consumption of hard coal was 36 per cent down on the average for the 2000s. At the end of December 2011, stocks of hard coal amounted to some 5.2 million tonnes, or 41 per cent more than one year earlier. Improvement of the water situation in Sweden and Norway changed the electricity market in the Nordic countries at the beginning of summer. The Nord Pool Spot system price describing the market price of electricity fell towards the end of the year. In the summer, exports of coal condensate electricity turned into imports of hydro electricity.
