General government expenditure by function 1996-2005

In National Accounts government expenditure is classified by purposes according to international Classification of Functions (COFOG). The classification consists of ten divisions.

Social protection forms the largest division of general government expenditure. The share of social protection spending was equivalent to 42 per cent of total general government expenditure in 2005. The next most important functions are health, general public services and education. The share of health expenditure in 2005 was 13.6 per cent and that of education 12 per cent.
