The number of new enterprises nearly five per cent lower compared the year before

According to Statistics Finland, enterprise openings continued to decline in 2014 as their number was 4.9 per cent lower than in the previous year. Enterprise closures continued to rise, as their number was 12.8 per cent higher than in 2013. Examined by industry, the numbers of enterprise openings and closures were highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 28,806 enterprise openings in 2014. Enterprise openings accounted for 8.1 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in 2014. The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where it totalled 4,602, or 16.0 per cent of all enterprise openings in 2014.

There were 30,849 enterprise closures in 2014. Enterprise closures accounted for 8.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises. The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, where it totalled 5,810, or 18.8 per cent of all enterprise closures in 2014.

Examined by region, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings (10,602) and closures (11,552) were recorded in Uusimaa in 2014. Compared to 2013, the number of enterprise openings increased most in North Karelia (22) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-505). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (3,334) and decreased most in Ostrobothnia (-22).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures in 2014 were recorded in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (9,915 and 10,838, respectively). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Oulu (9.2%) and that of closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (10.0%).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings (5,337) and closures (5,940) were recorded in Helsinki in 2014. Compared to 2013, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Porvoo (37) and decreased most in Helsinki (-306). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (1 298) and decreased most in Kouvola (-44).

Examined by legal form, during 2014 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 14,471 and those of the form of limited company 11,650. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 15,697 and those of the form of limited company 11,575.

These numbers include changes in enterprises resulting from incorporations and mergers, for example.
