Publication principles for statistics at Statistics Finland
Release times of statistics
Statistics Finland's statistical releases and statistical database updates are published at 8 am on weekdays on the Internet. The data are public after they have been updated on the Internet pages.
Exceptions are the statistics published in press conferences, whose publication schedule is decided separately. The Communications unit decides on exceptional publication times after negotiations with the Departments.
The release times of other current information like news items and news about revisions in statistics are decided case-specifically.
Confidentiality of data prior to publication
Data are released to all users at the same time.
Statistical data may only be handled and are only available in advance at Statistics Finland to persons involved in the production of the statistics concerned or who need the data of the statistics concerned in their own work before the data are published.
Statistics that affect capital and financial markets: The Act on the Openness of Government Activities (Section 24, Paragraph 1, Sub-paragraph 13) prescribes that statistics describing the development of the national economy and other documents containing data that apparently could have an effect on the capital and financial markets are secret before the data are published. For these statistics, statistics-specific lists are maintained on the persons that have the right to handle the data.
In special cases data can be released before the official release under the so-called embargo principle. These situations include: EU regulation or agreement based data releases are sent to Eurostat, the European Central Bank or the Bank of Finland, and releasing of data based on separate agreements to other authorities producing statistics and other producers of official statistics for the compilation of a publication that is released after Statistics Finland's release, or for mandatory EU reporting. In such cases, the data must be indicated as confidential until their release (the embargo principle, i.e. the recipient may not publish the data before the agreed time).

The publication dates of statistics are confirmed every autumn in connection with the planning of activities. The release calendar for the coming year is made available to users in December.
The release calendar of statistics contains information on the timing of future releases. The calendar also contains direct links to already published statistical releases and publications.
If necessary, the calendar is updated during the year directly via Statistics Finland's operational guidance and planning system STOJ. Possible customer communication related to the changes is agreed separately between the Communications unit and the statistical department. So-called irregularities in releases are recorded for all schedule changes made in the release calendar of each year after its confirmation.
Correction situations of published data
Corrections to publications and databases are carried out in line with the separate guidelines and principles regarding revisions and corrections (TK 00-575-12). Erroneous data are corrected in the original place of publication and data users are informed of the corrections.
News notification service
Data users can subscribe to emails concerning releases on desired topics (so-called news notification service).
