Description

Cultural statistics describe production, supply, finances, public support, labour force, education, interest and consumption in various fields of arts and culture. The data are used to produce the cultural table service and its statistical reviews and the basic publication concerning cultural employment and StatFin tables containing data on cultural occupations and regional data on Statistics Finland’s website. In addition, articles are published in the Tieto&Trends periodical and in other forums.

Data content

The statistics provide data on the production, dissemination, intermediation, consumption and financing of culture. The contents extend to the topics of minority language and cultural groups, cultural heritage and tourism, different fields of art, labour force in art and culture, cultural education, cultural events, cultural centres, participation in culture and cultural economy. International comparison data are also included.

The data are public.

Classifications used

A number of different classifications are used, such as those of fields of art, industries, occupations, age, gender, levels of education, municipalities and regions.

Data collection methods and data sources

The data derive from Statistics Finland, institutions and associations in the field of culture, and from numerous other sources. The internal data sources of Statistics Finland include the Leisure Survey, Time Use Survey, National Accounts, statistics on education, the Household Budget Survey, statistics on the finances of municipalities and joint municipal boards, employment statistics, the Labour Force Survey, statistics on the population structure and the Business Register. External sources of data and statistics include the Ministry of Education, Arts Council of Finland, Finnish Theatre Information Centre, National Board of Antiquities, Finnish Book Publishers Association, National Library of Finland, Finnish Film Foundation, Association of Finnish Symphony Orchestras, IFPI Finland and Finland Festivals. A small proportion of the data, such as those on art and cultural fairs, film and photographic centres, cultural centres and cultural periodicals, are obtained with own collection. The sources of the data are described in detail in each table.

Data collections

Tables are updated continuously into a network database which can only be accessed by the personnel of the unit responsible for these statistics. A concise selection of cultural statistics is available in Statistics Finland’s free online StatFin data service and as Excel tables.

Time of completion or release

The cultural table service is updated four times a year, in March, June, September and December. The basic publication concerning cultural employment and the connected StatFin tables appear once a year at the end of August.

Time series

The time series vary in length. The longest start from the 1930s, while the commonest lengths go back to the 1980s or 1990s.
