Self-directed study
In the Adult Education Survey, self-directed study was taken as comprising personal study - learning of new knowledge and skills - occurring beyond the sphere of formal, organised education. Thus it may be fairly informal in character and may be pursued by the respondent either alone or in the company of colleagues or friends. So-called occasional studying is not included.

In the report "Results of the Lifelong Learning Ad Hoc module 2003", self-directed study means learning and intentional development of knowledge or skills in other than formal, organised training or teaching. In self-directed study the person is typically self responsible for teaching arrangements and the studying takes places without a teacher. No minimum duration has been set for self-directed studying.
One's knowledge and skills can be intentionally developed by oneself by reading books and magazines, by studying using the Internet or following TV or radio educational programmes for learning purposes or using cassettes, CDs, videos, etc.
