Financial statements inquiry for enterprises
Description of the data collection
The financial statements inquiry for enterprises (TILKES) annually collects data on the breakdown of income and expenditure, increases and decreases in assets, and itemised balance sheet data. A majority of the data is collected from the Tax Administration’s business taxation file. The data are supplemented with Statistics Finland's own data collection.
The obligation to provide data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004). The European Union's regulations also require the collection of the data in question. (Council Regulation No 295/2008 concerning structural business statistics and Regulation (EC) No 549/2013 concerning on the European system of national and regional accounts in the European Union.)
Enterprises may submit the data electronically on a web form. The inquiry concerns the financial year that ended between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021. The data collection starts annually in March.
From whom are data collected?
The inquiry concerns all enterprises with over 60 employees, as well as enterprises with a turnover of over EUR 40 million or a balance sheet exceeding EUR 300 million. Enterprises with 10 to 60 employees have been drawn into the inquiry by random sampling. The inquiry also comprises some enterprises with a lower number of employees and all municipally owned enterprises. In total, the inquiry comprises approximately 5,500 enterprises.
What are the data used for?
The data are used for the compilation of statistics on financial statements and those describing enterprises’ foreign ownership and other structural business statistics and economic statistics. The collected enterprise and establishment data are also used as research material and in calculations of national accounts, regional accounts and financial accounts.
The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential and use them only for statistical purposes. Classifications: Standard Industrial Classification 2008.
