Inquiry for industrial establishments
Description of the data collection
The inquiry for industrial establishments annually collects data on industrial establishments' breakdown of income and expenditure, investments and inventories. A majority of the data is collected from the Tax Administration’s business taxation file. The data are complemented with Statistics Finland's own data collection. Industry includes mining and quarrying, manufacturing, as well as electricity, gas and water supply and sewerage and waste management.
The European Union's regulations require the collection of the data on the activities of industrial establishments (Council Regulation No 295/2008 concerning structural business statistics and Regulation (EC) No 2223/96 on the European system of national and regional accounts in the Community).
The data can be submitted electronically on a web form. The inquiry concerns the financial year that ended between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021. The data collection starts annually in April.
From whom are data collected?
As a rule, the inquiry for industrial establishments extends to all industrial establishments of multiple-establishment enterprises employing at least 50 persons. In certain cases, industrial establishments of enterprises with fewer employees than this are also included in the inquiry. The inquiry also involves municipalities' industrial units.
Enterprises' obligation to provide the data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004).
What are the data used for?
The data are used for the compilation of regional and industrial statistics, as well as other structural business statistics and other economic statistics. The collected data are also used in the calculations of national accounts, regional accounts and financial accounts, and as research material in Statistics Finland's Research Laboratory.
Data processing
The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential and use them only for statistical purposes.
