Annual survey on foreign financial assets and liabilities (BOPA)

Description of the data collection

Statistics Finland collects data from non-financial corporations, financial and insurance corporations, municipalities and the government on their balance of payments on foreign financial assets and liabilities. Data on the organisation's or its Finnish affiliate's balance of payments on foreign financial assets and liabilities are reported in the inquiry. The inquiry covers intra-group and external foreign assets and liabilities. If necessary, some respondents are asked for a separate report on business acquisitions and mergers.

From whom are data collected?

Finnish non-financial corporations, financial and insurance corporations, and public sector units that have been selected for the inquiry based on the sample are obliged to supply data.

What are the data used for?

The data are used to compile balance of payments statistics, direct investments statistics and other financial and economic statistics for Finland, the eurozone and the EU area at Statistics Finland, the European Central Bank and Eurostat.

Data processing

The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential and use them only for statistical and research purposes. The data will be published so that data on individual enterprises cannot be identified.

Changes

The annual survey on foreign financial assets and liabilities has previously been conducted as a joint data collection between Statistics Finland and the Bank of Finland. Starting from the statistical reference year 2016, Statistics Finland will assume full responsibility for the data collecting.
