Statistics Finland's statistics on living conditions show that 6.6 per cent, or 57,000 of children aged 1 to 15 experienced material deprivation concerning at least one basic need in 2021. Material deprivation experienced by children is measured with 13 indicators. The share of children having experienced deprivation concerning at
least one basic need has decreased since 2009, when 10.8 per cent of those aged 1 to 15 had experienced deprivation on at least one indicator.

The bar chart shows the share of children having experienced material deprivation on at least one dimension in 2009, 2014 and 2021. The share of children having experienced material deprivation has diminished in all reference years.

Key points

  • Material deprivation experienced by children has diminished. At least slight material deprivation was experienced by 6.6 per cent of children aged from 1 to 15 in 2021, while the corresponding share was 10.8 per cent in 2009.
  • Experiencing material deprivation is more common among children belonging to one-parent households than among those belonging to two-parent households.
  • In all, 9.3 per cent of children aged under 16 had at least minor activity limitations in 2021.

The bar chart shows the proportion of children having experienced material deprivation on at least one dimension by household type in 2009, 2014 and 2021. The share of children having experienced material deprivation has decreased in all reference years among children living with both one and two parents. However, material deprivation experienced by children living in one-parent households has been clearly more common in all three years than deprivation among children living with two adults.
