United Nations’ Global Forum on Gender Statistics in Finland

Statistics Finland hosts the sixth Global Forum on Gender Statistics in Helsinki on 24 to 26 October 2016. The conference is organised in cooperation with the United Nations Statistics Division, UNSD.

The main theme of the conference is the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators framework, from a gender perspective. The conference brings together experts from international organisations and statistical institutes from different countries.

The programme contains interesting presentations on gender equality and statistics from different perspectives, such as women's economic position, violence against women, time use, political participation and health. The speakers include President Tarja Halonen, Ambassador for Equality Issues Anne Lammila from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Nicolas Fasel (OHCHR), Gaëlle Ferrant (OECD), and Manal Sweidan from the Department of Statistics, Jordan. The UN coordinator of the conference is Francesca Grum (UNSD).

In addition to Statistics Finland and the UNSD, the cooperation partners of the conference include the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Gender Equality Unit of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, the Council for Gender Equality, the City of Helsinki, the Ministry of Finance, and Minna - Centre for Gender Equality Information.

In 2016 to 2017, Finland chairs the UNSD’s Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Gender Statistics, which coordinates and controls the UN's Gender Statistics Programme.

The Global Forum has convened every other year since 2007. The previous conference was organised in Mexico in October 2014.
