Statistics Finland and Finnish Customs improve the efficiency of international trade statistics production

Statistics Finland and Finnish Customs have agreed on cooperation with the objective to develop the statistics production concerning the international trade sector by increasing statistical cooperation between the institutions. Finnish Customs compiles statistics on international goods trade and also publishes data, for example, on the goods account.  Statistics Finland produces, according to national accounts, international trade data, statistics on international trade in services, and the current account that also contains data on goods trade.

The aim of the increased cooperation is to make it easier to exchange data and expertise between the institutions and make statistics production and data collections more efficient. In addition, the objective is to improve customers' knowledge on the various statistical methods used for international trade indicators and their use purposes.

Cooperation between the institutions has tightened already this year. Finnish Customs has participated in Statistics Finland's development project concerning international trade in services, as a result of which international trade statistics according to national accounts will be released in June 2016. In addition, Finnish Customs has carried out an import cost inquiry on goods in cooperation with Statistics Finland. Its results will be published during November 2015.

In line with the new agreement, a strategy and expert group of international trade statistics has also been established. The joint project group of Finnish Customs and Statistics Finland will develop the new joint publication International trade by enterprise type, the purpose of which is to give an overall picture of the imports and exports of goods and services in international trade.
