The Population Census in the Year 2000
The population census of the year 2000 will be the third Finnish census to have been taken by using almost entirely registers only. The two register-based censuses before it were taken on 31 December 1990 and 31 December 1995.

Data Availability
The main products from the population censuses are tables and publications based on the data. The data are available by municipality and by regional divisions based on municipalities, e.g. province, region, and sub-region. The data include co-ordinates so that tables can also be compiled by areas smaller than municipality, and by freely-defined areas as required. The data can also be supplied in map form. The tables are available in electronic format (Excel, PC-AXIS, ASCII) and as print-out. Special compilations can be made as required by the customer.
Certain key population census data will be entered under the topic Väestölaskenta (Population Census). into the free StatFin Service. It is Statistics Finland's self-service system. Chargeable print-outs and tables can be ordered by e-mail, fax, or telephone.
The data are also entered into the Finnish Longitudinal Census Data File, which contains comparable data on all topic areas from the population censuses of 1950 and 1970-1995.
The Census data are used to update other Statistics Finland databases (the following products are in Finnish only):
- Suomi-CD (Finland CD), which contains data by postcode areas
- Kuntafakta (Municipal Facts), which contains data by municipality and other administrative regions
- Teema-CD (Topic-CD) which contains data in map form
- Sijoittumis-CD (Transition CD), which contains data on students making the transition from school to work, by education and occupation.
Key Census data are also produced annually: demographic and educational data are available by municipality as far back as the 1970s; employment statistics have been produced since 1987; data on buildings, dwellings, and household-dwelling units are available from 1985, and data on families from 1994. Data on these topics can be found in the Statistics Finland StatFin Service (in Finnish only) under the subjects Väestö/Työssäkäyntitilasto (Population/Employment Statistics), Koulutus (Education) and Asuminen (Housing).
