Unemployment rate 8.4 per cent in April

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in April was 226,000, which was 6,000 higher than one year ago. In April 2012, the unemployment rate was 8.4 per cent, having been 8.2 per cent in April of the year before. There were 9,000 more employed than in April of the previous year.

In April 2012, the number of employed persons was 2,468,000, which was 9,000 higher than a year earlier (margin of error ± 31,000). There were 4,000 fewer employed men and 13,000 more employed women than in April 2011. The number of employed persons grew in the private sector but fell in the public sector.

In April, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 68.5 per cent, which was 0.3 percentage points higher than one year earlier. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 69.2 per cent. From last year's April, employment rate rose by 0.8 percentage points to 68.2 per cent among women but fell by 0.3 percentage points to 68.7 per cent among men.

According to the Labour Force Survey, there were 226,000 unemployed in April 2012, i.e. 6,000 more than in April of the year before (margin of error ± 17 000). The number of unemployed men was 137,000 and that of women 89,000.

At 8.4 per cent, the unemployment rate in April was 0.2 percentage points higher than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 9.8 per cent and women’s 6.9 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 7.7 per cent. In April, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 was 23.5 per cent, or the same as in April of the year before. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.2 per cent.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of April 2012, there were altogether 239,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices. The number of unemployed job seekers was 2,000 higher than in April 2011.

Unemployment decreased from April of the previous year in the areas of seven Employment and Economic Development (ELY) Centres; by most in Pirkanmaa (–5%), Satakunta (–4%) and Southwest Finland (–3%). The number of unemployed job seekers grew by most in North Karelia (10%), South Ostrobothnia (6%), Lapland (6%) and Åland (7%). At the end of April, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 16,000, or the same as twelve months earlier.

The total number of persons covered by labour market policy measures was 115,000 at the end of April, or the same as in April of the year before. Altogether 4.3 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy measures.

There were 28,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 1,000 higher than in last year's April. During this April, 48,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which is 2,000 more than in April 2011.
