Allocation of environmental protection investments in 2012

Environmental protection investments in industry amounted to around EUR 302 million in 2012, which is more than ever before. Most investments were made in environmental protection by the metal industry and energy supply, both over EUR 70 million. The majority of environmental investments in energy production and one-half of those in the metal industry were directed to air protection.

The biggest share, 45 per cent, of all environmental investments in industry was directed to air protection, in all EUR 136 million. This sum includes investments for controlling various different air emissions. However, excluded from the statistics are part of the measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gases, as the statistics do not cover energy saving measures.

The share of water protection was again the second biggest and made up 28 per cent of all environmental investments. Waste management and soil and groundwater protection had a share of 22 per cent.

In addition to investments, environmental protection equipment and measures cause operating costs and other operating expenditure such as administrative and research costs. In 2012, operating expenditure caused by environmental protection amounted to nearly EUR 560 million, which comprised 65 per cent of all environmental protection expenditure in industry. The bulk of operating expenditure consisted of the operating and maintenance costs of various environmental protection equipment. Of these, the biggest share was still directed to water protection, which in 2012 accounted for 42 per cent of the operating and maintenance costs of environmental protection.
