Distress in industry continues

According to Statistics Finland, the working-day adjusted output of total industries (BCDE) was 21 per cent lower in April 2009 than twelve months earlier. Industrial output decreased by 16.6 per cent year-on-year in March. Over the January to April period industrial output has declined by close on 21 per cent from the previous year's corresponding time period.

Output continued to fall in most main industries in April. Output in the chemical industry and in the electrical and electronics industry fell by a good 16 per cent. In the metal industry output fell by 25.1 per cent. In the forest industry output declined by close on 31 per cent. The only bright spot among the main industries was the food industry, where output increased by 0.5 per cent year-on-year in April.

Capacity utilisation rate in manufacturing (C) was 66.7 per cent in April, which was 17.7 percentage points lower than in last year's corresponding month. In the forest industry, capacity utilisation rate was 66 per cent, which was nearly 21 percentage points lower than one year earlier.

Estimation

In many months of the year the volume index of industrial output uses estimation in industry 26-27, Electrical and electronics industry. In this industry Statistics Finland estimates data 8 times a year. Not all of the data on this industry is at Statistics Finland's disposal at the time of publication. For example, estimated data for January-February became revised in May when data were released for March. As the weight of the industry (26-27) is 20 per cent in total industries, using estimation may influence the point figures and change percentages calculated for the volume index of industrial output even if previous data on other industries do not become revised. Further information is available under Revisions in these statistics.

Revised data for April will be published at 9 am on 10 July 2009 in connection with the industrial output data for May. Because of the method used, seasonally adjusted figures for previous months may change even if the original figures do not become revised. The seasonally adjusted figures will also be adjusted for working days.
