Industrial output went up by 0.8 per cent year-on-year in September

According to Statistics Finland, industrial output adjusted for working days was 0.8 per cent higher in September 2008 than twelve months earlier. In the January to September period, industrial output adjusted for working days grew by 1.9 per cent from twelve months back. The rate of growth has slowed down by nearly two percentage points from last year's corresponding time period. Among the main industries, the biggest growth of nearly 19 per cent was recorded in September in the manufacture of electronic and electrical products. However, exclusive of the manufacture of electronic and electrical products, output in the manufacturing industry contracted by good 3 per cent. The growth in the electronics industry pushed output in the whole metal industry up by good 7 per cent. Output declined most, or by 12.5 per cent, in the wood and paper industry. In other manufacturing output fell by 5.1 per cent. In the chemical industry, output decreased by 2.4 per cent in September.

Where appropriate, the use of value data has been increased again in early 2008. This has made it possible to widen the coverage of services produced by manufacturing enterprises in the statistics. Besides so-called industrial services (repair, maintenance and installation), these may also comprise other services, such as research and development services, administrative services, royalties and licences, as well as merchanting services. The measures have also improved the coverage of the sample-based monthly index.

In some months certain data on the manufacture of electronic and electrical products are not available sufficiently early. Estimation is used for this industry in a number of months, so more revisions than normal may take place in the data. This may also have caused changes to the point figures and change percentages for the early part of the year.

Revised data for September 2008 will be published at 9 am on 28 November 2008 in connection with industrial output data for October 2008.
