Time series data for housing costs since 2002.

The income of households living in owner-occupied dwellings has developed almost continuously more favourably than the income of households living in rented dwellings since the mid-1990s. From 1995 to 2011, the median for equivalent disposable income of households or disposable income of households calculated per consumption unit, grew, in real terms, by 45 per cent for households living in owner-occupied dwellings and by 25 per cent for those living in rented dwellings. In 2011, the income did not grow for either group.

The housing costs for households were, on average, 18.2 per cent of disposable monetary income in 2011. For households living in owner-occupied dwellings the average income share of housing costs was 14.1 per cent in 2011. The share was higher than in the previous year when it was 13.3 per cent. For households living in rented dwellings the income share of housing costs remained, however, almost unchanged. It was 26.7 per cent on average in 2011, three-tenths of one per cent higher than one year earlier. Of households living in owner-occupied dwellings, for 3.1 per cent and for 12.6 per cent of households living in rented dwellings the income share of housing costs exceeded 40 per cent. Of all households, 6.1 per cent had housing costs of this magnitude. The amount increased from the year before (5.5 per cent in 2010).

The income level of those living in rented dwellings was 67.7 per cent of the level of those living in owner-occupied dwellings in 2011 measured by the median of the groups. After paying the housing costs, the median of disposable monetary income calculated per the household's consumption unit was EUR 11,008 for those living in rented dwellings, which was 53.1 per cent of the median income of those living in owner-occupied dwellings (EUR 20,741) in 2011. In 2010, the income level of those living in rented dwellings was 52.3 per cent of the income level of those living in owner-occupied dwellings.
