Finnish enterprises abroad, nearly 5,000 affiliates in 118 countries in 2010
Finnish enterprises had business activity in 4,733 affiliates located in 118 countries in 2010. Measured by the number of personnel, the activity in affiliates abroad concentrated in Europe and Asia. The personnel abroad totalled over 572,000, of whom one-third were working in EU 15 countries, good one-fifth in Asia and Oceania and nearly one-fifth in EU 27 countries. Examined by country, the numbers of personnel were the highest in Sweden, China, Russia and Germany. These data were produced by Statistics Finland, and they are based on data collected from enterprises.
Personnel in affiliates abroad by country group in 2010
Finnish affiliates employed the largest numbers of persons in EU 15 countries, altogether nearly 192,000 persons. In EU 15 countries the largest industries by the number of personnel were the machinery and metal products industry (37,000 persons) and the paper industry (30,340 persons). Measured by the number of personnel, Finnish affiliates' personnel was the second biggest in Asia and Oceania, numbering good 127,500. The industries with the highest numbers of personnel in Asia and Oceania were the electrical and electronics industry (74,170 persons) and the machinery and metal products industry (27,180 persons). In EU 27 countries the number of personnel was good 101,600 and the biggest industries were the electrical and electronics industry (16,900 persons) and wholesale and retail trade (16,270 persons). Of individual countries, the numbers of personnel in affiliates were the highest in Sweden (72,250 persons), China (62,450 persons), Russia (50,610 persons) and Germany (42,140 persons). The manufacturing industry was the most significant employer in Finnish affiliates abroad. The numbers of personnel were the highest in affiliates of the electrical and electronics industry (138,640 persons) and the machinery and metal products industry (110,030 persons).
Investments by affiliates abroad into their tangible goods amounted to good EUR 4.2 billion gross. Sixty-seven per cent of the investments were made in Europe and 24 per cent in Asia and Oceania. In the EU countries, the largest investments were made by the paper industry (EUR 457 million) and in European countries outside the EU by wholesale and retail trade (EUR 124 million). In Asia and Oceania, investments concentrated in information and communication activity (EUR 441 million) and the chemical industry (EUR 211 million). Among individual countries, investments totalled most, or EUR 583.2 million, in Sweden. Examined world-wide, affiliates of the chemical industry invested the largest total amount of EUR 749.2 million.
The combined total turnover of Finnish affiliates located abroad amounted to good EUR 179.5 billion. The figure describes unconsolidated turnover, in other words it includes, for instance, intra-group trade. Forty-two per cent of the turnover was made in EU 15 countries and 23 per cent in Asia and Oceania. In EU 15 countries the largest amounts of turnover were generated in wholesale and retail trade (EUR 17.6 billion) and in the paper industry (EUR 15.3 billion). In Asia and Oceania the industry with the most significant turnover was the electrical and electronic industry (EUR 21,6 billion). Among the industries, the highest turnover world-wide was generated by the electrical and electronics industry (EUR 38.0 billion) and by wholesale and retail trade (EUR 37.9 billion).
