Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased in February to April year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, in February to April 2019, building permits were granted for a total of 8.8 million cubic metres, which is 25.7 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year ago. The cubic volume went down clearly for all building types from the corresponding period one year ago. The cubic volume for commercial and office buildings, and public service buildings decreased most, by nearly 34 per cent. The cubic volume granted for residential buildings went down by 17.4 per cent from one year back.

Residential building construction decreased further

During February to April, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 2.7 million, while one year earlier, the figure was 3.3 million cubic metres. The cubic volume for all residential building types decreased year-on-year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential blocks of flats decreased by 21.2 per cent, that for terraced houses by 5.8 per cent and that for detached houses by 13.2 per cent.

In the February to April period of 2019, building permits were granted in total for 9,196 dwellings, one year earlier the corresponding figure was 11,522 dwellings. The number of building permits granted for residential buildings fell by 20.2 per cent from the previous year.

Volume of building production is growing slightly

In February to April 2019, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 1.2 per cent year-on-year. The volume of construction of residential buildings declined in the period by 3.0 per cent and that of other than residential building construction increased, in turn, by 4,9 per cent. Measured by volume, 2.0 per cent fewer building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. The number of residential building starts was 1.6 per cent higher than one year ago.
