Residential building construction continued growing

In October to December, building permits for residential buildings were granted for a total of 3.3 million cubic metres. The figure was 11.7 per cent higher than one year previously. The growth was maintained by building permits granted for residential blocks of flats of which around one-half were granted for greater Helsinki.

In October to December, building permits were granted for a total of 11,235 dwellings, growing by 19.0 per cent from the corresponding period of the year before.

In 2017, the number of building permits granted for residential buildings was the highest during the history of the current statistics. Building permits were granted for a total of more than 47,000 dwellings, while, for example, in 2010 the corresponding figure was around 33,600. The average size of a dwelling has decreased in ten years from around 100 square meters to below 60 square meters.

Volume of building production grew year-on-year

In October to December, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 5.2 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased in the period by 9.1 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 1.9 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, nearly the same amount of building projects and 12.4 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.
