The wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 1.8 per cent greater in the past January to March period than in the corresponding period twelve months before. The rate of growth slowed down from the previous year's January to March period during which the year-on-year growth in the wages and salaries sum was 8.1 per cent. In March the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy fell by 0.8 per cent from the year before.
The growth in the wages and salaries sum slowed down in almost all main industries in the first quarter of the year. The wages and salaries sum grew slightly more favourably than in the year before in the private educational sector (7.8 per cent) and the public sector (7.5 per cent). By contrast, the wages and salaries sum fell in manufacturing (6.1 per cent), financial intermediation (2.9 per cent) and construction (0.3 per cent). In trade and other services growth in the wages and salaries sum slowed down clearly from the year before.
