Volume of sales increased in all sectors of trade in November

The volume of total sales grew by 2.6 per cent from November 2014. In November, the sales volume in wholesale trade grew by 0.7 per cent and in retail trade by 2.7 per cent from one year back. Among the sectors of trade, the sales volume of motor vehicle trade went up most, by 10.1 per cent year-on-year. The growth was affected by increased sales of new motor vehicles, because Statistics Finland’s data indicate that the number of first registrations of motor vehicles was also 21.3 per cent higher in November than in November 2014.

The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series. Due to lower prices, sales volume developed more favourably than turnover apart from motor vehicle trade.

Sales in retail trade fell by 1.1 per cent in January to November

In retail trade, sales decreased by 1.1 per cent from January to November 2014. In wholesale trade, the decline in the corresponding period was 5.0 per cent year-on-year. Motor vehicle trade was the only sector of trade where sales increased in January to November, by 1.4 per cent from one year ago. Total trade sales contracted in January to November by 3.0 per cent year-on-year.

Annual changes in trade sales and sales volumes are given unadjusted for seasonal variation. Annual changes particularly in retail trade may be affected by the number of weekday trading days. There were 25 weekday trading days in November 2015, which is one day more than in November 2014. Weekday trading days refer to the weekdays of a calendar month (Monday to Saturday) excluding mid-week holidays.
