Local government productivity continued to fall in 2007

According to revised data in Statistics Finland statistics on local government productivity, the combined total productivity of education, health and social work of local government fell by 2.2 per cent in 2007. This decline was due to stronger growth in total input volume than in output volume. The volume of total input grew by 2.7 per cent, while the volume of output grew by 0.4 per cent.

Total productivity fell in all the three industries under examination. The total productivity of health fell by some 2 per cent as total input grew by over 2.5 per cent and output by only roughly 0.5 per cent. The output of education stayed almost unchanged and its total input grew by over one per cent, so total productivity fell by nearly 1.5 per cent. The total productivity of social work fell by 3.5 per cent as output grew by one per cent and total input by as much as 4.5 per cent.

From 2002 to 2007 local government total productivity has declined by roughly 5 per cent. The total productivities of social work and health have fallen by 6 per cent and that of education by some 3 per cent.

The statistics are based on national accounts data. The statistics are compiled at the level of the whole country and the data are not available by municipality or joint municipal board.
