Revised EMU deficit and debt figures for 2005 released
General government EMU surplus for the year 2005 did not change essentially compared with preliminary data released in March 2005. EMU surplus was EUR 4.2 billion, or 2.7 per cent of GDP in 2005, while in the previous year it was EUR 3.5 billion, i.e. 2.3 per cent of GDP. General government euro-denominated debt grew clearly from the preliminary figures, but the corresponding upward adjustment of the GDP figure led to only a small change in relative debt. In 2005 EMU debt was 41.3 per cent of GDP, representing a 0.2 percentage point rise relative to the preliminary figure published in March. In 2004 general government EMU debt was 44.3 per cent of GDP. The figures appear from the data reported by Statistics Finland to the European Commission in September.
Statistics Finland now publishes for the first time the contents of the EDP notification compiled for the European Commission as concerns actual deficit and debt levels (years 2002-2005). The report can be found on the pages of these statistics under 'Tables'. In addition, Statistics Finland will publish on those same pages a description, or the EDP inventory, of the methods used in the deficit and debt calculations.
