The number of enterprise openings increased in the second quarter of 2017

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings increased by 1.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2017 from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,309 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2017. Enterprise openings increased by 1.9 per cent from the second quarter of 2016, when they numbered 7,171. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.0 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2017.

Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 1,166, or 16.0 per cent of all enterprise openings in the second quarter. In construction, enterprise openings numbered 1 017 (13.9%) and in trade 980 (13.4%). Compared to the second quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise openings decreased most in trade (-112).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the second quarter of 2017 in Uusimaa, where it was 2,718. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (656) and in Varsinais-Suomi (608). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.3%) and Central Finland (2.2%). Compared to the second quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Central Finland (74) and decreased most in Etelä-Savo (-37).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2017, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,571), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (527) and Turku (404). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Itä-Lappi sub-regional unit (3,1%). Compared to the second quarter of 2016, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (67) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Turku (-35).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the second quarter of 2017 in Helsinki (1,396), followed by Espoo (481), Tampere (359), Vantaa (338) and Turku (336). Compared to the second quarter of 2016, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (69) and decreased most in Oulu (-34).

Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2017, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 3,577 and those of the form of limited company 3,164. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 48.9 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 43.3 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 1st quarter 2017

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,028 enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2017. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2017.

Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,108, or 18.4 per cent of all enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2017. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 895 (14.8%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 868 (14.4%). Compared to the first quarter of 2016, the number of enterprise closures increased most in professional, scientific and technical activities (131).

Examined by region, in the first quarter of 2017, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (2,253). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (541) and in Pirkanmaa (512). Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the most enterprise closures (1.9%). Compared to the first quarter of 2016, enterprise closures decreased most in Kainuu (-9) and increased most in Uusimaa (271).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2017, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,113), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (407) and Turku (341). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional units of Ylä-Pirkanmaa (2.0%). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2016, enterprise closures decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Forssa (-19) and increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (244).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the first quarter of 2017 in Helsinki (1,136), followed by Espoo (276), Vantaa (265), Tampere (254) and Turku (197). Compared to the first quarter of 2016, enterprise closures decreased most in Huittinen (-12) and increased most in Helsingfors (99).

Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2017, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 3,281 and those of the form of limited company 2,080. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 54.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 34.5 per cent of all enterprise closures.

Enterprise openings and closures are deduced from the Tax Administration’s customer database. Therefore, changes in Tax Administration’s information systems or database management practices may affect the statistics and the comparability of the time series.
