The number of enterprise openings decreased in all regions
According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 8.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2015 from the respective quarter of the year before. In the fourth quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was up by 2.9 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities and enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings and closures was highest in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,595 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2015. Enterprise openings decreased by 8.3 per cent from the first quarter of 2014, when they numbered 9,370. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2015.
Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 1,435, or 16.7 per cent of all enterprise openings in the first quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,382 (16.1%) and in construction 1,070 (12.4%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the first quarter of 2015 in Uusimaa, where it was 3,113. The number of enterprise openings was next highest Varsinais-Suomi (788) and in Pirkanmaa (786). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.8%). Compared to the first quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise openings decreased least in Ostrobothnia (-3) and most in Uusimaa (-241).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2015, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,905), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (640) and Turku (537). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Sisä-Savo sub-regional unit (4.1%). Compared to the first quarter of 2014, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Sisä-Savo (16) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (-252).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2015 in Helsinki (1,531), followed by Espoo (453), Tampere (389), Turku (322) and Vantaa (306). Compared to the first quarter of 2014, enterprise openings increased most in Vaasa (25) and decreased most in Helsinki (-112).
Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2015, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 4,428 and those of the form of limited company 3,432. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 51.5 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 39.9 per cent of all enterprise openings.
Enterprise closures, 4th quarter 2014
According to Statistics Finland, there were 11,951 enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2014. Compared to the fourth quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 2.9 per cent, as in the fourth quarter of 2013 they numbered 11,619. Enterprise closures accounted for 3.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2014.
Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 2,241, or 18.8 per cent of all enterprise closures in the fourth quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities, enterprise closures numbered 1,993 (16.7%) and in construction 1,710 (14.3%).
Examined by region, in the fourth quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (4,259). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Pirkanmaa (1,107) and Varsinais-Suomi (1,028). Relative to the enterprise stock, Åland had the most enterprise closures (4.0%) and next Uusimaa (3.9%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (332) and decreased most in Varsinais-Suomi (–166).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (3,945), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (875) and Turku (679). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Joutsa (4.6%). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (550) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Turku (-93).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2014 in Helsinki (2,126), followed by Espoo (599), Tampere (503), Turku (370) and Vantaa (369). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (294) and decreased most in Turku (-74).
Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2014, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 6,142 and those of the form of limited company 4,521. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 51.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 37.8 per cent of all enterprise closures.
