Description
The statistics describe the activities of non-life, life and pension insurance companies. The statistics cover profit and loss account and balance sheet data, as well as data concerning insurance classes and portfolio.
Data content
Data on financial statements include: profit and loss accounts, balance sheets and data on the insurance portfolio, and class of insurance specific data. Insurance portfolios of pension insurance companies contain data on, e.g. the number of pensions and payments due to them, and provisions for unearned premiums and outstanding claims divided by the type of pension. Insurance portfolios of life insurance companies contain data on, e.g. payments due to insurance policies, provisions for unearned premiums and outstanding claims, and data on the number of policies. Insurance portfolios of non-life insurance companies contain data on, e.g. statutory accident insurance, statutory and voluntary (Kasko) vehicle insurance, and provisions for their unearned premiums and outstanding claims. The class of insurance specific data of life and non-life insurance companies include, e.g. the number of damages reported, insurance premiums and compensations paid by class of insurance.
The insurance companies are viewed as independent institutions not as groups.

Classifications used
The data collection uses data provider level classification of the VIRATI data collection. The same classification is used in a reduced form in the statistical release. The release only contains data provider levels 401 Employment pension insurance company, 410 Life insurance corporation, incl. branches abroad, and 420 Non-life insurance corporation, incl. branches abroad.
Data collection methods and data sources
The data are collected in a data collection directed to enterprises active in the insurance markets according to the Financial Supervision Authority. The data are collected electronically.
Updating frequency
The data are updated once a year.
Time of completion or release
The statistical data are completed at the latest 10 months after the end of the reference period. Exact dates of release will be given in advance on the home page of these statistics.
Time series
From the statistical reference year 2012 onwards Statistics Finland has been responsible for compiling and releasing the statistics. The time series will be created from this year onwards.
