In the past two decades, communication has changed from location-specific use of telephones to a more varied kind of communication not bound to a certain location in which non-voice services and data transmission have an increasingly important role alongside voice services. At the end of 2008 there were already over 10 million telecommunications subscriptions in Finland; fixed telephone network subscriptions numbered close on 1.7 million, mobile phone subscriptions 6.9 million and broadband subscriptions nearly 2.1 million. Call minutes from mobile phones amounted to some 13.5 billion, which was nearly 3.4 times as much as the call minutes from local telephone networks during the year. Outgoing calls from mobile phones totalled just short of 4.8 billion, which was 7 per cent more than in 2006. By contrast, the number of calls made from local telephone networks declined even further. Their number fell by 16 per cent and totalled just under 1.3 billion in 2006. The number of call minutes fell by even more than this. The call minutes of outgoing calls from the local telephone networks numbered barely 7.5 billion in 2005, which was as much as 35 per cent down on the previous year's figure. In recent years, the key features in the development of telecommunications have been a decline in the use of services in the fixed telephone networks and growth in the use of other networks and subscription types. This development continued strong also in 2005. It should be pointed out, however, that these statistics do not cover calls transmitted in IP networks.
