<title>Finnish travel abroad increased in 2012</title>

<description>In 2012, Finns made 7.8 million different leisure trips abroad. The number increased by 17 per cent from 2011. The number of domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation also grew compared to the previous year, being nearly 6.4 million. The increase from the year 2011 was ten per cent. Business trips in Finland decreased slightly but the number of business trips abroad continued to grow after the drop in 2009.</description>

<description>There are no signs of recession in the growing popularity of travelling, for Finnish residents travelled eagerly both in the home country and abroad during the September to December period of 2012. Sixteen per cent more domestic trips with paid accommodation were made than one year earlier. Travel abroad was even slightly livelier, increasing by 17 per cent from the respective period of the year before.</description>

<description>In 2011, Finnish residents made nearly 4.3 million such leisure trips abroad that involved staying overnight in the destination country. The number increased by eight per cent from 2010. The number of domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation was slightly lower than in the previous year, being nearly 5.8 million. The number went down by two per cent from 2010. Business trips in Finland and abroad continued to grow after the downturn in 2009.</description>

The destination of every fourth of these trips was the Canary Islands. Finnish residents made nearly 120,000 cruises in December. Leisure trips in Finland with paid ac-commodation remained on level with the previous year. The regions favoured in December were Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia.</description>

<description>November darkness prompted Finnish residents to travel to Estonia or the Canary Islands. Trips with overnight stays to Finnish residents' favourite destination of Estonia numbered 73,000 while 76,000 trips were made to Spain. The destination of 77 per cent of the trips to Spain was the Canary Islands. Cruises to Sweden also attracted Finnish residents in the late autumn gloom. Domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation decreased from the respective time period of the year before. The region favoured in November was Uusimaa.</description>

Finnish residents made 176,000 leisure trips or cruises with overnight stays to Estonia and Sweden, which is 56 per cent more than in the corresponding period of one year ago. Finnish residents were also keen to travel to the Mediterranean to where the number of trips went up by 78 per cent from last year. Domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation went down by 11 per cent in September when compared with the respective month of the previous year.</description>

Finnish residents made 265,000 leisure trips or cruises with overnight stays to these countries, which is 7 per cent less than in the corresponding period of one year ago. Finnish residents made 707,000 leisure trips with paid accommodation in Finland. This is 18 per cent less than in the previous year's August.</description>
