<title>Faster completion of qualifications and degrees</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, university education was completed by 49 per cent of students in about five-and-a-half years, a higher university degree by 21 per cent and a lower university degree by 28 per cent. The pass rate for university education improved by two percentage points. In other sectors of education, the pass rate improved by one percentage point. The pass rate for a polytechnic degree in four-and-a-half years was 41 per cent. Initial vocational education was passed in three-and-a-half years by 65 per cent, and matriculation examination by 80 per cent.</description>

<title>Women graduated from universities faster than men</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, a university degree was completed by 47 per cent of students in about five-and-a-half years, by 58 per cent of women and 34 per cent of men. Polytechnic education was passed in four-and-a-half years by 40 per cent of students, by 54 per cent of women and 24 per cent of men. The pass rate for upper secondary general education was on level with the previous year. In other sectors of education the pass rate improved from the year before.</description>

<description>According to Statistics Finland, 63 per cent completed vocational education aimed at young people within three-and-a-half years. The completion rate for vocational education improved by 1.6 percentage points from the previous year. Men's pass rate of vocational education improved by nearly 2.5 percentage points and was nearly a percentage point higher than women's. In other sectors of education pass rates remained on level with the year before.</description>

In the other sectors of education the pass rates were on level with the previous year. In four-and-a-half years polytechnic education aimed at young people was passed by 40 per cent of the new students. An initial vocational qualification was passed in three-and-a-half years by 62 per cent and a matriculation examination by 79 per cent.</description>

During the same period, 73 per cent of the students in vocational education attained a vocational qualification. By the end of 2007, polytechnic degrees were attained by 71 per cent of the students who entered polytechnic education twelve-and-a-half years ago. During the same period, 77 per cent of the new students at universities attained a lower or higher university degree.</description>
