<title>Alcohol mortality decreased further in 2011</title>

<description>According to Statistics Finland's statistics on causes of death, alcohol mortality decreased by four per cent in 2011 from the previous year. The fall is mainly caused by decreasing alcohol mortality among men. A total of 1,890 persons died from alcohol-related causes, 1,450 men and 440 women. Deaths from alcohol-related causes are considerably more common among men than women. They are also the most common cause of death for persons of working age.</description>

<title>The number of suicides lowest in 40 years</title>

<description>In 2010 the number of suicides was eight per cent lower than in the previous year. The number of suicides has last been lower in 1967. A total of 954 persons, 718 men and 236 women, committed suicide in 2010. The highest numbers of suicides are committed by people of working age and in these age groups suicides have diminished considerably in recent years. Men commit suicides significantly more often than women: two thirds of the suicides are committed by men.</description>

<title>Injuries caused by falls the most common reason for fatal accidents</title>

<description>Accidental falls were the most common accidents leading to death for both men and women. A total of 1,188 persons died in such accidents, 57 per cent of whom were men. Over one third of men's fatal accidents and over one half of women's were caused by accidental falls. Accidents caused around six per cent of all deaths in 2009. In 2009, accidents were the cause of the death of 2,903 persons, of whom 1,986 were men and 917 women.</description>

<title>Deaths from dementia more than doubled in two decades</title>

<description>A total of 49,904 persons, 25,152 men and 24,752 women, died in 2009. As the population ages dementia is becoming an increasingly widespread cause of death alongside ischaemic heart diseases. In 2009, almost one in two persons who died over the age of 80, died either of ischaemic heart diseases or memory disorders. The number of deaths caused by dementia has more than doubled in two decades.</description>

<description>In 2005 alcohol-related causes, i.e. alcohol-related diseases and alcohol poisonings became the leading cause of death among working-age men. Ischaemic heart disease had been the leading cause of death for decades. Nearly as many working-age women died of alcohol-related causes as of breast cancer. Alcohol-related mortality has increased at an especially fast rate in 2004 and 2005. This data is included in the Statistics Finland statistics on causes of death.</description>
