Annual inquiry on international trade in services and international flows of goods

Description of the data collection

In the annual inquiry on foreign trade in services and international flows of goods data are asked about international trade in services carried out by enterprises and international goods flows divided by country and item. The classification used in the compilation of the statistics is the Extended Balance of Payments Services (EBOPS) classification, which is an international classification presented in the Manual on International Trade in Services.

The inquiry covers manufacturing services, maintenance and repair services n.i.e., postal and courier services, transport services, construction services, financing services, telecommunication, information technology and information services, royalties and licence fees, other business services, and personal, cultural and recreational services. The inquiry does not include tourism and insurance services on which data are already collected with other inquiries. The division of countries used in the questionnaire is based on the Balance of Payments manual.

Preliminary data on international trade in services are completed at a lag of six months and final data at a lag of one year from the end of the statistical year.

From whom are data collected?

Data on international trade in services and international flows of goods are collected from all enterprises known to have significant international trade in services or sales of goods abroad. A random sample is drawn from smaller enterprises. The target population for the inquiry has been drawn from Statistics Finland’s Business Register.

The data are collected annually and the inquiry covers some 2,500 enterprises.

The enterprises’ obligation to supply data is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004).

In accordance with the Statistics Act (280/2004).

What are the data used for?

The data are used for the compilation of the statistics on balance of payments, national accounts, international trade in services, and international trade in goods and services.

Changes

The name of the data collection was updated to correspond to the data content of the inquiry. The previous name, International trade in services has been replaced with a new name, International trade in services and international goods flows.
