Universities' research and development
Description of the data collection
The inquiry on universities' research and development collects data on R&D activity on personnel, expenditure, sources of financing, investments and grants awarded to R&D activity. The data on time-use of personnel is collected every 3 to 5 years.
Recommendations of the OECD and EU are observed in the compilation of the statistics.
The compilation of statistics on research and development activity is based on the Commission Regulation No 995/2012 concerning the EU statistics on science and technology.
The data collection is started annually in February. The deadline for the data collection is in April.
From whom are data collected?
All universities supervised by the Ministry of Education and Culture are included in the inquiry.
The data supply obligation is based on the Finnish Statistics Act (280/2004, Section 14).
The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential.
What are the data used for?
Universities' R&D data are combined with the R&D data of business enterprises and the public sector in order to view R&D activity as whole.
The data are used to monitor and analyse the development of inputs in research and development in public administration, organisations, research institutes and in the business world, both in Finland and abroad. The data can also be used for research purposes.
